The recently announced 48-hour rail strike will only make things difficult for the general public. Unfortunately, it comes at a time when bus drivers and road workers will also join the strike. The network rail has requested that commuters travel only for emergencies due to reduced services. Commuters across England, Scotland and Wales are affected by the strike.
Amidst the strike, RMT’s head Mick Lynch says that a deal can be possible between the union and the employers if some conditions are revised and better pay is promised. It raises hope among the commuters as more strikes are to be announced on Christmas eve from 6 PM to 6 AM until 27th December.
On the other hand, the Transport salaried staff association members accepted a deal by the Network rail for a 9% pay rise for two years. However, more than half of RMT’s workers have rejected the same offer.
Transport Secretary, Huw Merriman has urged the workers to reconsider the offer and end the strike. He exclaimed that this would benefit the rail industry, the economy and the people. They were looking forward to celebrations with their loved ones after over two years due to the pandemic.
To add to the woes, National highway traffic officers and bus drivers across south and west London will also observe the strike. The workers union accused the management of paying the lowest wages for bus drivers in London.
