Streptococcus A, often known as Group A Strep (GAS), is a bacterial infection of the throat or skin that can occasionally cause scarlet fever. In rare cases, the bacteria enter the bloodstream and develop nosy Group A strep, which can be lethal.

Health officials in the United Kingdom encourage parents to be cautious after a recent outbreak of severe Strep A infections killed at least six children. The Health Security Agency of the United Kingdom issued an unusual health warning on Friday, encouraging parents to watch their children for signs of the sickness, including a sore throat, headache, fever, and body rashes.

While most instances are minor and frequently go unreported, they can potentially lead to more severe sickness and consequences, such as scarlet fever.

Scarlet fever is a highly infectious bacterial infection primarily affecting children under five. It usually causes flu-like similar symptoms and a fine rash that can be treated with antibiotics.

In rare cases, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and create a condition known as invasive Group A strep (iGAS). These fatal illnesses are assumed to cause the current wave of deaths.
